On April 11, 1986, Astral Media officially launched the FUND (Foundation to Underwrite New Drama for pay-television), making it the first Canadian broadcaster to set up a national, non-profit private fund to support the development of film and made-for-pay-TV productions. In 1996, the foundation was renamed The Harold Greenberg Fund/Le Fonds Harold Greenberg (The Fund/Le Fonds) in honour of the late Harold Greenberg. At this time, the French-language Program was created to ensure French-language film and television creators also had equivalent access to such funding.

Now 21 years later, The Fund/Le Fonds has successfully established itself as Canada’s largest private funding agency for English and French-language film and television projects, having collectively invested over $58 million to date.

The English-language Program sponsored by The Movie Network, Family and Viewers Choice offer feature film script development loans as well as equity investments for both feature film and television productions. Its French-language Program is sponsored by Astral Media, Super Écran, Family and Canal Indigo and also offer feature film script development loans and equity investments for the production of feature films in addition to documentaries, special events, drama programs for youth and music programs, as well as grants for music videos.

The Fund/Le Fonds play a critical role in supporting homegrown film and television productions and in turn, proudly showcase stories that are uniquely Canadian.
