Investing in our communities

At Astral Media, we invest in the communities where our employees make their homes and raise their families. While we support a variety of worthy causes, a major portion of our corporate social responsibility program is directed at kids and youth in the fields of health and education.

Our latest support took three forms. We donated TV and radio airtime, and billboard space, to educate Canadians about causes, raise their profile and promote events. We, as well as our employees, made cash donations to registered charities. Finally, we contributed expertise and resources to specific causes and events. Globally this year, we contributed more than $9 million in value to over 300 organizations. Some of these initiatives included:

  • Reaching the $3 million mark in donated air time and space in support of Dr. Clown - well ahead of our three-year target. Our employees also raised over $28,000 for Dr Clown, an organization of clowns that bring laughter, smiles and a measure of relief to kids and the elderly in institutional settings. The past year also saw two ad campaigns and the airing of a documentary on Dr Clown, financed by Astral Media Le Fonds Harold Greenberg. And the result? A spike in individual and corporate donations enabling more programs in Montréal, as well as the launch of five programs in Quebec City and plans to expand in the Toronto area!

  • Énergie, RockDétente and boom fm joined forces for the annual Opération Voeux de Noël that raised over $ 1.1 million at Christmas for various charitable organizations.

  • In its ongoing efforts to help kids deal with the issue of bullying, Family Channel initiated the fourth annual national Bullying Awareness Week, November 13 to 19, 2006. On-air, online and grassroots campaign elements built around the call-to-action "stand Up!TM" culminated in rallies, which were awarded to schools in Ottawa, Winnipeg and Victoria. Over 10,000 kids across Canada had nominated their schools for the rallies, answering the call "tell us how you and your school stand up to bullying."

  • Popular on-air host Saskia Thuot helped to raise awareness about eating disorders, and worked on behalf of Canal Vie's ongoing support for the cause of organ donation. The channel did its part by producing an ad campaign for organ donation that features spokesperson Thuot, and by donating $1 million in airtime.

  • As for VRAK.TV's campaign to get kids off the couch and counter youth sedentariness, it hosted the second annual ST-VRAK Day, attempting to set a Guinness World Record for most people skipping rope simultaneously in various locations.

  • We have also donated TV and radio airtime, as well as billboard space to organizations such as Accueil Bonneau, Dans la rue, Éduc'alcool, Fondation des Auberges du coeur, Fondation Jean Lapointe, Gai Écoute, MIRA, Montreal Heart Institute, Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada, Québec Breast Cancer Foundation, Ste-Justine Hospital, The Big Media's Food Drive, Opération Enfant Soleil, and several other local and national organizations.

In Fiscal 2008, Astral Media will continue to enhance its ever-growing support of important causes. We are also committed to perpetuate the numerous philanthropic activities of Standard Radio. Maintaining close ties with communities across Canada as responsible corporate citizens is at the heart of our management philosophy and employees' values. Accordingly, we will also work with our employees to become the industry leader in terms of environmental responsibility. More than ever, Astral Media is committed to reducing its environmental footprint. Printing a minimal number of annual reports and launching the most innovative online annual report among Canada's public corporations is only the beginning.
